Safety & Security

The Residence Life experience at SUNY Poly is based on the principles of providing students with a safe, healthy, and attractive living environment that supports the academic mission of the college. The residence halls provide opportunities for interaction among peers of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Many aspects of residence hall living occur simply by the nature of the environment, while others are shaped by the goals of the institution. SUNY Poly places a high priority on the concept of residence halls serving as living-learning environments.

Residence Life Staff

Each residence hall is supervised by a residence director, a professional staff member who resides within the hall. Each building is also staffed by trained resident assistants (RAs).

A designated residence hall director, or their designee, is on duty at all times. Each residence hall has an RA on duty from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. each weekday and from 5 p.m. to 5 p.m. the following day on weekends, adjusting to 8 a.m. on Mondays.

Residence Life staff members undergo training in residence hall security policies.

Off-campus housing may include apartments, individual homes, and individual rooms in private homes. SUNY Poly does not provide supervision for off-campus housing.

Residence Hall Safety and Security Features

SUNY Poly residence halls include a variety of safety and security features, including:

• Fire extinguishers in common areas and buildings.
• Upholstered furniture that is self-extinguishing.
• High-visibility emergency call boxes with blue lights.
• Keyless locks on exterior doors, which are locked 24 hours a day.
• Doorbell systems on exterior doors in Adirondack and Mohawk residence halls.
• Vision panels on entry doors.
• Viewers in every suite entry door.
• Contact switches on exterior doors that activate an alarm when a door is left ajar.
• Solid wood bedroom doors and solid metal doors at suite entrances.
• Closed-circuit cameras that monitor residence halls and other areas of campus.
