Pregnancy Adjustments

Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, which includes discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, and recovery from any of these conditions. Under Title IX, schools must provide pregnant students with the same level of services and accommodations as it provides to students with other temporary medical conditions. The Title IX Office is responsible for coordinating adjustments for pregnant and parenting students.

Under Title IX, students must be allowed time off due to pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions for as long as their provider deems medically necessary. The Title IX Office works with the student to collect the proper medical documentation in the adjustment request process. Students cannot be penalized for their absences related to pregnancy, and must be allowed to return to the same status they held before taking leave. Under Title IX, pregnant and parenting students must be provided with an opportunity to make up their missed work.

Title IX does not just prohibit pregnancy discrimination in academics, pregnant and parenting students also have the right to reasonable adjustments in school-sponsored extracurricular activities and internships, athletics, financial aid and scholarships, career counseling, and lab and clinical work.

To request an adjustment due to pregnancy or a pregnancy related condition, please contact the Title IX office via TitleIX@sunypoly.edu. The Title IX Coordinator will work with you and the appropriate faculty and staff members to create a reasonable adjustment plan.
