Definition
A missing student means any student of SUNY Polytechnic Institute who is subject to the provisions of Section 355(17) of the New York State Education Law, resides in a facility owned or operated by SUNY Poly, and is reported to SUNY Poly as missing from their residence.
Response and Investigation
When SUNY Poly or a local law enforcement agency receives a report of a missing student, the receiving department will conduct a preliminary investigation to verify the report and determine the circumstances related to the student's disappearance.
If the student's absence is verified, information about the incident will be shared between SUNY Poly University Police and the appropriate local law enforcement agency. The departments will continue the investigation and coordinate their efforts to locate the missing student.
If the student is not located after further investigation, the departments will determine the most effective way to continue the investigation. Information related to a report of a missing student will be shared by the appropriate departments no later than 12 hours after the initial report.
If the missing student is located or returns to SUNY Poly after the matter has been reported, the appropriate departments will notify each other as soon as possible.
Reporting a Missing Person or Student on Campus
A SUNY Poly employee, student or other member of the University community who receives information about a missing person or student should immediately report it to the University Police Department using one of the following methods:
- Dial 111 from a campus phone.
- Call University Police at 315-792-7111.
- Use a campus emergency phone.
- Use a campus emergency call box.
Reporting a Missing Person or Student Off Campus
To report a missing person or student off campus, contact the appropriate law enforcement agency:
- Emergency: Call 911.

Students Under Age 18
If a student under the age of 18 is reported missing, the student's parent or legal guardian will be notified. Efforts will be made to maintain the confidentiality of missing person reports as appropriate.
