Faculty Announcements

Colleagues. Faculty support is very important to the success of the WCC, so please consider including the following language (or your version of the language below) about the WCC in your syllabus.

Visiting The Writing and Communications Center (WCC): You should be familiar with the WCC, but if you are not, I strongly suggest that you make a visit to the WCC at least once during the semester, even and especially if you feel that you do not need it. The WCC can help you develop your ideas, respond to a text, organize your writing, and help you revise your work by giving guidance about proofreading and grammar so that you can hand in work that best reflects your thoughts and your ability as a writer. Also, if you receive an initial grade on any piece of writing that you did not expect, I strongly recommend that you visit the WCC and share proof of your visit with a WCC Conference Summary. The WCC is not a place to punish "bad" students for making "mistakes"; it is a place where you can understand better what your professor is looking for and how to best express yourself in writing. What the WCC cannot do for you is proofread your essay, "fix" your writing, or guarantee you an A. What you get out of it is all up to you.

Here, also, is a required assignment or an extra credit option Alyssa Steele has used and shared with the WCC. If you would like to require students attend a workshop, or if you would like to provide extra credit opportunities for your students, this is the recommended approach. Modify as you please.

Assignment/Extra Credit Description

You are required to/may attend at least one (1) Writing and Communications Center (WCC) Student Resource Workshop during the fall semester. To receive credit for attendance, you must:

1. Have the workshop facilitator sign the Record of Workshop Attendance form (faculty will have to make this independently)
a. This means you have to print the Record of Workshop Attendance before you attend.

2. Write a brief, 250-word summary of the workshop addressing what was covered, at least 2 new items or resources that you learned about, and at least 1 way you intend to use that resource to help you become a stronger writer.

Both items must be submitted to the appropriate assignment dropbox in D2L Brightspace by November 1, 2023 at 11:59 pm EST to receive credit for this assignment.

You can find the list of workshops here: Student Resource Workshops by the WCC
