SummerITeens, a program that offers a variety of applied math and science day camps for area middle and high school students, will take place in July and August on the SUNYIT campus. This year's camps include robotics, nanotechnology, girls' math & science, and computer security, and renewable energy. SUNYIT faculty and community engineers conduct the camps, where the emphasis is on fun and challenging explorations in the company of other like-minded students.

All camps are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tuition ranges from $100-200 per camp, and need-based scholarships are available. For more information and online registration, visit sunyit.edu/summeriteens, e-mail summeriteens@sunypoly.edu or call 315-792-7383.

 

FIRST Lego League Introduction July 7-10

This 9 a.m.- noon camp is full, wait list only. Introduction to FLL, from robots to teamwork to research. Design, build, and program Lego Mindstorms robots to meet challenges on the FLL playing field.

 

Lego Mindstorms SUMO Robots (ages 12 and up) July 14-17

Can your bot push my bot out of the ring? Teams use Lego Mindstorms to fight it out in the Sumo ring. The simple premise masks serious engineering challenges. Computer Security (ages 12 and up) July 21-24

Become adept at blocking hacker attempts to gain control of your computer and data. Learn about the software, hardware, and techniques used to keep your computer and data secure.

 

Lego Mindstorms Advanced - Wacky Machines July 28-31

(permission of instructor; experience required) For Mindstorms enthusiasts with experience.  Take your creation to a new level of control with ultrasonic, light, color and touch sensors used in creating connectable modules to transfer objects through space. Think Rube Goldberg machines!

 

Nanotechnology July 28-30

9-12 grade students will experience hands-on labs and discussions about nano-applications and careers. Includes tour of the new Quad-C building on the SUNYIT campus.

 

Digital Storytelling (grades 8 and up) August 4-7

Ever wanted to create your own movie or video games? Like creating your own stories and characters? In Digital Storytelling, you will be guided in using easy, fast software and studio equipment to tell the stories you create! No previous experience necessary.

 

Girls' 3-D Daze and other Engineering Technology (ages 12 and up) August 4-7 Get into 3-D - draw and make stuff with a 3-D printer. Use crafts in combination with circuits to make lights you wear!

 

Girls' Math/Science (ages 12 and up) August 11-14

Secrets are being told all around you. Learn about the secret, strange, and fantastic ways that nature communicates through sound, smell, and touch. People can also share secrets that no one else can understand. Find out how mathematics allows us to create and share secret messages with your friends. Join us as we explore the exciting and secret world of communication.

Renewable Energy August 11-14

Explore solar, wind, and hydro energy using virtual and hands-on equipment. Discover how renewables are being used now to meet our energy needs in Central New York. Collaborate with other teens as you use virtual tools to help design, build and operate real wind turbines and photovoltaic solar systems. Try out a photovoltaic solar roof and a cool ropes course. Have fun competing with virtual and hands-on energy related games such as managing an electric grid mock-up and racing solar cars.
