When a company shares office space in a large building, you never know who you will meet in the hallway, elevator, or cafeteria.

The employees at engineering firm DPS are looking forward to those chance encounters at the new, $191 million Zero Energy Nanotechnology building on the SUNY Polytechnic Institute campus in Albany.

“Whatever these vendors are working on eventually comes our way,” said Barry O’Sullivan, vice president, business development at DPS.

DPS, an Irish firm with more than 1,000 worldwide employees and about $200 million in annual revenue, moved into a 5,000-square-foot office on the third floor of the so-called ZEN building in September. The building’s name was derived from the fact that it uses renewable energy sources to generate as much energy as it uses.

Just beyond the threshold of DPS’s front door is a large indoor atrium filled with natural light. It’s a natural gathering place, thanks to the nearby cafeteria.

The finishing touches are still being put on the six-story, gleaming office building that towers above Interstate 90 near Exit 2, the latest example of how private industry and public investment are coming together on the $20 billion-plus SUNY Poly campus.
