Albany -Three Capital Region institutions and companies received nearly $600,000 in state funding for research into energy-efficient lighting, cooling and heating in buildings.

The support was part of the state's Reforming the Energy Vision strategy, said John B. Rhodes, president and CEO of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

NYSERDA made the following awards in the Capital Region:

$98,000 to Albany-based Good Light LLC for development of "nano-material" to aid in LED semiconductor production. The material could reduce production cost by using gallium nitride on low-cost silicon wafers, which is a less expensive alternative to the sapphire wafers used for LEDs today.

$300,000 to the SUNY Polytechnic Institute's Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering for a "smart building energy management system" to monitor and forecast energy needs at the Zero Energy Nanotechnology (ZEN) Building.
