The Business Review: GE, SUNY Poly and a plan for better chips

GE Global Research has started looking for partners to join the New York Power Electronics Manufacturing Consortium, including small- to medium-sized companies in the semiconductor supply chain.

General Electric is looking to expand its consortium at SUNY Polytechnic Institute to help build a silicon carbide chip fab.

Danielle Merfeld, director of GE's power electronics unit, said the plan is to set up a manufacturing line at SUNY Poly by 2017. That line could produce about 30,000 chips a year -- about 10 percent of the market, or $150 million a year. The technology would be an alternative to silicon chips, and is expected to produce more durable, lighter and more efficient chips.
