The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany was No.1 in the country for research expenditures funded by business in fiscal year 2013.

That's according to a report out last week from the National Science Foundation.

The nanocollege received $201.6 million in research and development expenditures from business, a piece of the college's $374.2 million in total research expenditures for 2013. About 53.9 percent of the research expenditures at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering were funded by businesses, compared with the national average of 5.2 percent.

In 2013, the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering was a part of the University at Albany. Last year, the nanocollege merged with a separate SUNY campus after splitting from UAlbany to create SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Rounding out the top three universities that received the largest amount of expenditures from business were Duke University ($177 million) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ($122 million).

Among Albany area colleges, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy received the second-largest amount of research and development funding from business ($5.7 million), followed by Albany Medical College ($1 million), Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences ($517,000), and University at Albany ($471,000).

The National Science Foundation report was compiled using an annual census of 891 colleges and universities that had research expenditures of at least $150,000 in 2013.

Here's a look at how research expenditures have changed at area colleges in recent years:
