As part of a National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals initiative to excite students from all backgrounds about biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing by exposing them to biotechnology career opportunities and pathways, College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE) faculty provided an experiential learning opportunity to 16 individuals from colleges and universities across the U.S. during day two of the week-long NIIMBL eXperience @ ACPHS.

The students learned about nanoscale medicines and then made nanoparticles in the laboratory. They were able to measure size distribution of the particles via dynamic light scattering (DLS) and discussed the multiple quality attributes affecting nanoparticle therapies. Afterwards, they received a tour of the Albany NanoTech Complex and its cutting-edge fabrication facilities, with discussions about the interactions between semiconductor and biomanufacturing technologies. Following the tour, the students conducted nucleic acid experiments at the University at Albany’s RNA Institute before the day concluded with an ice cream social at CNSE.

The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was selected by NIIMBL as one of three locations to host the NIIMBL eXperience Program 2023. The program is an exclusive in-person, all expenses paid immersion program that offers students real-world insight into biopharmaceutical industry careers through hands-on activities and direct interactions with industry professionals.
