Residents of Mohawk Hall have earned green bragging rights.  Over the first three weeks in April, they conserved their way to a win in the SUNYIT 2014 Campus Conservation Nationals residence hall energy and water conservation competition.

SUNYIT CCN Electricity Competiton Results

  1. Mohawk Hall: 3.9% electricity reduction
  2. Adirondack Hall: 4.1% electricity increase
  3. Oriskany  Hall: 9.9% electricity increase

In addition, SUNYIT student residents saved a cumulative three-week campus-wide water savings 10,164 gallons.

Special Notes:

Residents of Oriskany Hall used on average about half as much water per person per day as residents in the other residence halls.  This fact is due to all the low-flow fixtures and appliances installed in this building, which was designed to meet  LEED Silver standards.

There was a water fixture leak problem in unoccupied rooms Adirondack Hall during the competition which was discovered and fixed by facilities personnel. Water savings were less than expected and therefore not able to be considered for competition purposes.

SUNYIT also participated in a 2014 Power of SUNY electricity consumption competition against three other SUNY campuses. The results are as follows:

  1. SUNY New Paltz  7.6% reduction
  2. Stony Brook University  5.0% reduction
  3. University at Albany  0.2% reduction
  4. SUNYIT  11.0% increase

Our congratulations goes out to SUNY New Paltz and all the SUNY participants who saved electricity (and money) over the April 1 to 25 competition.

For the entire Nationwide competition, the results were amazing!

Total Electricity Savings:

2.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity

Equivalent to taking 201 U.S. homes off the grid for one year

Total Water Savings:

476,000 gallons of water

Equivalent to 1.8 million 1 L water bottles

Thanks to everyone for participating!  Keep on saving water and electricity wherever you go.  You are making a positive difference in your world.

Special thanks to co-organizers Brittany English, Ryan Troup, and Imani O'Connor. Thanks to Aaron LaFave and Carson Sorrell for compiling utility data.
