Physics Lecturer Candidate Presentation (Utica Campus)

Wednesday July 13, 10:30

The college community is invited to a teaching/research presentation, by Dr. Abdou Abdel-Rehim, Physics Lecturer candidate.  The presentation will take place on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in Kunsela Hall, Room A131 (new classroom wing on first floor).

Dr. Abdou Abdel-Rehim will spend the first part of his presentation on his approach to teaching undergraduate physics courses (approximately 20-25 min) and in the second part of his presentation he will give an overview of his research.    The title and abstract of his  research presentation are as follows:

Title:   Scientific Computing for Fundamental and Applied Sciences

Abstract:

Progress in modern computing architectures and applied mathematics has opened the doors towards solving some of the most challenging problems in applied and fundamental sciences. Scientific Computing is nowadays an essential component in our search for solving challenging problems covering a wide range of domains including particle physics, graphene, climate change and designing new drugs. Scientific computing is a multi-disciplinary field. It brings a fruitful collaboration between scientists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians.

In this talk, I will review some of my works in the area of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (Lattice QCD).  I will describe how advances in computer hardware and numerical techniques enabled us to calculate important physical observables in particle physics using Lattice QCD that were otherwise inaccessible. In addition, it allowed us to search for new physics. I'll also describe how lattice techniques are used to study graphene.
