Description -

The maker movementis a community-based movement that utilized new, emerging, and accessible technologies to make things and create solutions: that is, to create, innovate, and build objects addressing a wide range of needs, problems, and /or goals.  The movement, which has emerged in recent years in communities across the United States and abroad, has its roots in diverse groups such as the DIY (do-it-yourself), hacker, and modding communities.  While varied in their motivations, goals, and practices, individuals who engage in these activities tend to employ hands-on and experiential learning, appreciate the activities of production over passive consumption, and value the sense of empowerment and achievement that comes through the tangible application of know-how.  What distinguishes the maker movement from these other communities is an explicit commitment to democratizing the processes of making and learning as a means for building a crreative, technologically engaged, and participatory citizenry.

The presentation explores the potential that the ideals, principles, and practices embodied by maker culture hold for enhancing the undergraduate educational experience.  The lecturers propose that creating a multi- and inter-disciplinary makerspace, a collaborative laboratory and learning environment, can provide the foundations for educational, curricular, and scholarly experimentation and innovation, and help to foster a campus culture of creativity , innovation, and entrepreneurship.  In this presentation, Drs. Lee, Confer, and Abdallah will introduce their proposal and invite the campus community to participate in its development and implementation.
