DELIVERING PI — Members of the SUNY Polytechnic “Pi Patrol” will
deliver educational Pi themed activities and pizza pies on Monday
afternoon to students in Utica at Watson Williams Elementary School
and Conkling Elementary School. Monday is March 14, which matches
the numeric approximation of pi of 3.14. (Photo submitted)[/caption]
In a pun for its SUNY PI abbreviation, SUNY Polytechnic Institute will mark a worldwide “Pi Day” observance Monday of the math symbol, known by the Greek letter “π,” with a fleet of vehicles sporting a “SUNY π Patrol” logo.
The “Pi Patrol” vehicles will deliver educational Pi themed activities and pizza pies on Monday afternoon to students in Utica at Watson Williams Elementary School and Conkling Elementary School, announced SUNY Poly.
The mathematical constant called Pi is commonly approximated as 3.14159, and is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 because references to the date as 3.14 can reflect the Pi ratio, SUNY Poly explained.
