Dear Colleagues,

As you know, all SUNY campuses make numerous and significant contributions to their local communities. The SUNY Distinguished Academy task force on Community Engagement, working in conjunction with Elise Newkirk-Kotfila from SUNY System Administration, feel that this is an opportune time to communicate knowledge of our many contributions to a wider audience both within SUNY and beyond. We propose to create a print publication highlighting the ever-present community outreach events, classes, projects and partnerships that our campuses are and have been working on, with a focus on service-learning, community service, civic engagement and arts & culture stories.

Our plan is to create a SUNY-wide print publication that will showcase campus efforts as a directory for the first year, and will then become an annual newsletter update. Similar to the  www.suny.edu/communityservice website, the goal of this publication will be to showcase campus efforts and best practices to a broad audience, giving credit to engaged faculty, staff, students, community partners and other members of the SUNY family, while simultaneously helping disseminate best practices and examples across SUNY institutions.

We would greatly appreciate receiving information on past and present projects from each campus by February 10, 2014.   Please use the following format:

Name of campus:

Name of class, project, event, or program:

Purpose of class, project, event, or program (a tag line):

Additional information (please provide a one-paragraph synopsis):

Campus contact person (whomever can be reached out to for more information):

The SUNY Distinguished Academy task force on community engagement is also planning a networking event in the spring. Further information on this event will be forthcoming.

Thank you very much for participating in this important initiative, and please do not hesitate to reach out to elise.newkirk@suny.edu with any questions.

Gratefully,

Elise Newkirk-Kotfila, Coordinator of Community Relations

Caroline Downing and Henry Steck, Distinguished Academy Executive Committee
