Albany, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) today announced the start of the 14th SUNY Poly Summer Internship Program, which will provide 40 top-tier students who attend SUNY Poly throughout the fall and spring semesters with an exciting, immersive, and project-based educational experience as the program expands from the institution’s Albany campus to also take place at its Utica campus.

“The Summer Internship Program is a great example of the experiential learning opportunities that SUNY Poly offers to students who are interested in gaining knowledge that will serve them well, long into the future,” said SUNY Poly Interim President Dr. Bahgat Sammakia. “This approach to education covers a number of subject areas in detail and does so in close collaboration with mentors, offering students the chance to continue to engage in laboratory environments and work with top faculty and staff to gain the skills that are in demand across a number of industries in New York State. We are proud that this valuable experience is now available at both of SUNY Poly’s campuses.”

“The SUNY Poly Summer Internship Program offers students real-world experience with the institution’s unique and innovative approach to providing a hands-on education,“ said SUNY Poly Provost Dr. William Durgin. “SUNY Poly is proud to expand the program to its Utica campus where a broad array of in-depth areas of study will help prepare students for a successful future in New York State and beyond.”

Of the 40 SUNY Poly undergraduate students who were selected for the rigorous program, most hail from New York State and will be able to build upon the advanced skills they are already gaining through the institution’s challenging undergraduate curriculum. The 10-week program offers 26 students the opportunity to leverage SUNY Poly’s high-tech facilities and expertise at its Albany campus; in addition, 14 students will gain an unmatched learning experience at the institution’s Utica campus. The program began with an orientation session Monday.

As part of the experience, interns are immersed in a multidisciplinary approach as they focus on a specific area of study, such as nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, network and computer security, applied math, civil engineering, computer and information science, biology, or mechanical engineering. A key component of the students’ internship experience enables them to work alongside leading SUNY Poly faculty members and staff who act as one-on-one mentors. At the program’s conclusion in August, each intern will present a research poster to showcase the results of his or her individual scientific investigation.

Including this latest class of interns, 440 students have now participated in the SUNY Poly Summer Internship Program since its inaugural year in 2004. For more information about the experience, please visit the following sites for the Albany and Utica campus-based programs, respectively:
