SUNY Poly Expands ACE Program, Launches New STAR Model to Strengthen Student Success

UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) today announced two major milestones in its commitment to student success: the expansion of the Advancing Completion through Engagement (ACE) program and the launch of the Student Advising Resources (STAR) model. Both initiatives are central to SUNY Poly’s mission to help students graduate on time and thrive in their academic and professional journeys.
Last year, with support from the SUNY Transformation Fund, SUNY Poly welcomed the first cohort of 150 students into ACE, a program designed to help students to navigate financial barriers and stay on track to earn a degree in four years. The nationally recognized model provides tuition and textbook support, a transportation stipend, career coaching, and, most importantly, personalized advising.
Building on that success and with further financial support from the state, SUNY Poly has now expanded ACE to serve an additional 100 students, bringing total enrollment to 250. A second ACE advisor has also been added to meet student demand.
“These supports are lifelines that help students build momentum and achieve their dreams,” said SUNY Poly Provost Dr. Andrew Russell. “Thanks to the growth of ACE, more students from across New York State will benefit from the resources and guidance they need to succeed.”
In addition to ACE, SUNY Poly has launched its new STAR model, a comprehensive and collaborative approach to advising. STAR unites faculty advisors, professional academic advisors, and the campus support network to ensure students receive the right guidance at the right time.
Under STAR:
• Faculty advisors mentor students within their majors, connecting coursework to research, internships, and careers.
• Professional advisors guide students through policies, deadlines, and academic pathways, offering case management and progress monitoring.
• The student support network provides access to wellness, accessibility services, counseling, and other resources that promote holistic success.
“Together, ACE and STAR represent the best of what SUNY Poly offers: inclusive support, innovative practices, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student,” Dr. Russell said. “These initiatives are possible because of the incredible teams we have leading them—faculty, advisors, and staff who are deeply committed to our students’ success. They embody the spirit of SUNY Poly, creating an environment where students can thrive.”
Elected officials also praised SUNY Poly’s efforts, noting the importance of collaboration and support for student achievement.
“We understand that in our workplace, no one can do it alone. It takes a strong collaborative team. This is also true in higher education,” said NYS Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon. “The goals of new models at SUNY Poly will support and prepare the students to be successful graduates and ultimately engage in a collaborative vibrant workforce.”
“I applaud SUNY Polytechnic Institute for expanding their Advancing Completion through Engagement (ACE) program and launching the new Student Advising Resources (STAR) model. As a member of the Assembly Higher Education Committee and a parent of a college student, I know the value of and am proud to support initiatives like these that remove barriers to graduation, provide comprehensive guidance, and help students reach their full potential,” said NYS Assemblyman Brian Miller.
“SUNY Polytechnic Institute prides itself on ensuring that all students have access to a quality education in a welcoming and inclusive setting,” said NYS Senator Joseph Griffo. “These programs will help the college better fulfill this objective by removing barriers that may hinder graduation and by providing critical guidance and support that will help students throughout their academic journey.”
These efforts, along with the tireless work of SUNY Poly’s admissions and financial aid teams, are already having a measurable impact. This fall, SUNY Poly welcomed the largest new undergraduate class in its history (800 students), and the institution’s retention rate rose to 81 percent, a 12 percent increase over the year prior.
SUNY Poly leaders also thank the SUNY system, state partners, and elected officials for their continued support.
“At SUNY Poly, student success is both a top priority and a promise,” Dr. Russell said. “With ACE and STAR, we are ensuring that promise is realized for more students every year.”
