• The need for new industrial clusters for the 21st century: nanotechnology (CNSE Albany), photonics (AIM Photonics, one of the National Network of Manufacturing Institutes), solar, biomedical, 3D printing and financial technology. In a hyper-competitive global contest, it is too simplistic to expect that natural evolution of businesses will respond to these critical state and national needs. Thanks to system innovations by Dr. Alain Kaloyeros of SUNY Polytech and Gov. Cuomo, New York is developing a statewide institution, similar to the Fraunhofer Society in Germany consisting of 67 applied industrial research institutes.
