Times Union: Cornell start-up wins state biz competition at SUNY

The best start-ups from universities across the state were battling Friday at SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s new ZEN building  at the New York Business Plan Competition, whose top sponsor is SEFCU, the Albany-based credit union.

UMA Bioseed, a student company from Cornell, won the $100,000 grand prize as well as first place in the energy-sustainability track. UMA Bioseed has developed an organic seed coating that protects seeds from  ”bacteria, fungi, and virus during its germination phase.” The start-up’s organizers say there is no solution currently that does all three.

UMA Bioseed has already won acclaim across the globe for its idea, including winning the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Five other university teams took home a first place, $10,000 prize for their tracks as well. a total of $500,000 in prizes were given away.

ACV Metrology, a SUNY Poly company won for advanced technology/nanotechnology.
