Burgeoning industry boosts other Capital Region businesses Malta

It's only a year old but already out of date.

The Saratoga Economic Development Corp.'s "Christmas in July" report last year looked at how GlobalFoundries outpaced its own job creation projections, doubling its original commitment of 1,200 new jobs, with 2,400 people on the payroll.

By the end of this year, it will triple that commitment with 3,600 employees.

The technology sector is creating thousands of high-paying jobs and stimulating the growth in unrelated businesses, everything from restaurants to retailers, auto dealers to airlines.

In GlobalFoundries' case, the study estimated the 2,400 employees supported the creation of another 3,000 jobs.

Farther south in Albany, the Colleges of Nanoscale Sciences and Engineering employs 3,000 people at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute campus on Fuller Road.
