Employers seek workers as area’s opportunities expand

Albany

For many Capital Region workers, 2015 may be the year they get a raise.

With the number of jobs rising and the unemployment rate dropping, finding enough qualified workers is becoming a challenge for more employers.

It's part of a brightening economic picture for the area. Many of the jobs lost during the recession have been recovered and new businesses have been hiring, which could push wages higher.

"Some tightness is starting to show up in the labor market," said Hugh Johnson, chairman and chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany. Unemployment fell to 4.7 percent in November; Johnson predicts that by 2016 the average jobless rate for the year will be 4.3 percent.

Much of the recent growth has been in the technology sector, as semiconductor maker GlobalFoundries adds hundreds of jobs as it expands its plant in Malta.
