This month, SUNY Poly’s Title IX Working Group would like to provide information for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 2010 Summary Report:

  • On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.
  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.
  • 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime to the point in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed.

SUNY Poly is showing its support for Domestic Violence Awareness Month by participating in the Purple Ribbon Campaign for the month of October to benefit the domestic violence programs and services of the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley.  This campaign is designed to raise awareness and energize individuals to become a force for positive change.  Through the selling of purple ribbons for $1, 100% of the proceeds will benefit the YWCA programs which include two emergency shelters, transitional housing for homeless victims of domestic violence, a 24-hour confidential hotline, individual and group counseling and victim advocacy.  The Utica Campus Bookstore will be selling these ribbons through October 31st along with student club Poly Pride.  Poly Pride will be selling ribbons on the following days:  October 20th and October 21st in the Student Center lobby (Utica), and October 22nd during the tailgate event.

You can help turn New York State purple this Thursday, October 20th.  The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence invites the state workforce and all New Yorkers to show their commitment to ending domestic violence by wearing purple, as part of the State's "Shine the Light on Domestic Violence" campaign.  You can send your photos to:  opdvpurple@opdv.ny.go.  The New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) and SUNY Poly are committed to creating a safe work environment for all employees.
