MARCY If no one gives them the opportunity, children will never be able to show adults what they can do, Janice Martino said.

“These kids are building mobile applications,” FIRST LEGO League coordinator Martino said. “They’re applying for patents. We really underestimate what they’re capable of. This is a place for them to show us.”

Twenty-four teams competed in the FLL Regional Championship Tournament at SUNY Polytechnic Institute Saturday.

They were required to compete in a series of competitions including robot design, a research project presented to judges and the main event — the Robot Game. Teams were given 2 1/2 minutes to complete missions with their hand-built robots, all exercises worth varying points.
