Alain Kaloyeros, a Lebanon-born ex-militia member, founded a nanotech University in New York state.

It's not every day a university is born, and certainly not one geared toward research in one of the most out-there fields in science, nanotechnology. But Alain Kaloyeros managed in 2014 to make just such a thing happen as the founding president of SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany. The new university combines the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany and SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. Also last year, Kaloyeros scored a big win for the institute by helping execute a $500 million public-private partnership that included GE and Lockheed Martin.
