I wanted to share with you a recent article in the Utica Observer-Dispatch:

A timeline for the Marcy nanocenter chip fab is becoming clearer.

NANO UTICA

Nano Utica is a joint venture among several public and private entities. Here’s a look at Austria-based AMS, one of three players at the heart of the venture, along with General Electric Co. and SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

  • Austria-based AMS will open a chip fabrication plant at the 420-acre site in Marcy that has long been groomed for a fab.
  • The company will invest $2 billion in the first phase of the project and expects to employ about 1,500 people.
  • The fab is expected to be operational by the end of 2017.

GENERAL ELECTRIC

  • GE is making a $150 million investment at the Quad-C.
  • The company expects to be in full scale production there in 2017 and to employ 470 people at that time. Another 450 jobs are expected over the next 10 years.

SUNY POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

  • SUNY Poly was formed by merging Marcy’s SUNYIT and Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. In 2009, the creation of the Computer Chip Commercialization Center, or Quad-C, was announced. The college also owns the 420-acre parcel of land where the AMS fab will be built.
