“There are many different ideas of what an engineer is and does,” Ioannis Miaoulis told the graduating class of SUNY Polytechnic Institute Saturday in the school’s field house.

Miaoulis, the president of the Boston Museum of Science was this year’s commencement speaker for the first group of students to receive a degree from the newly formed school.

More than 650 students turned their tassels during the 41st annual ceremony. The top three undergraduate degrees awarded at the ceremony were Bachelors of Science degrees in business administration, mechanical engineering technology, and nursing. The top graduate degrees awarded Saturday were of Masters of Science in computer information systems, family nurse practitioner, and technology management.
