Marcy, N.Y. - The third annual Hackathon continued at SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.

50 students from SUNY Poly, Utica College, Syracuse University, M.V.C.C. and Herkimer College worked as teams to protect their networks from hackers.

The two day event began on Friday.

Besides the students trying to hack into each other's networks to find out whose is the most secure, there were also a series of cybersecurity presentations conducted by industry professionals.

One of the event organizers, Jake Mihevec, the Director of Cybersecurity at M.V.C.C., says this is a way to test students on their knowledge of cybersecurity, "They're all given vulnerable systems that they can target and they're given systems that they need to defend, so it's an all morning and all afternoon event where they're trying to capture systems and keep the other teams out of their systems."

Mihevec says this event prepares students for the workforce, as this is exactly what professionals in the cybersecurity industry do on a day to day basis.
