WKTV: Nano Ready: Marketing Utica-Rome to young professionals

UTICA-ROME, NY - Nano-Utica has been the talk of this region for a few years now.

Hundreds of new jobs are expected to be created.  Hundreds of new people are expected to move to this area.  But are we ready for a population explosion?  And how are we enticing new, young professional to move to Utica-Rome?

Both the mayors of Utica and Rome say there is a feeling that things are changing in the region.

"The infrastructure is there," said Mayor Robert Palmieri.  "The downtown will be a neighborhood unlike what we've seen in maybe a hundred years."

In fact, Utica is seeing a number of upgrades. The Route 5-8-12 arterial project is in full swing and many buildings in Downtown Utica are getting new facades.

"We are well prepared as you look at us at this point," Mayor Palmieri.  "Our foundation is there.  And we're just growing to the point that once it does come, the 1,500 jobs for Nano-Utica, we're going to be able to open them with open arms."

In Rome, it is much of the same.  Many old buildings downtown are seeing new life.  Some are being converted to lofts, with mixed used businesses below.

The City of Rome is also working on their web image, constructing a new website.

"It's not just the city's message.  It's our school district's message, our chamber of commerce, our local businesses," said Mayor Joe Fusco. "We're really working together to put together a marketing tool that companies like AIS up at the Base can utilize to recruit people to come up here to their facility."

Mayor Fusco says the end goal is to simply put the city's best foot forward. "They can't possibly pick a better spot in the whole country."

Like Rome, Utica recently launched its new website, which can be read in 90 different languages.
