UTICA, NY-- Nursing students at SUNY Polytechnic Institute are learning to save lives and give back to their community.

The group of students reached out to Kids Oneida to find out how they could help local families going through difficult times.

The group adopted a family of six, collected toys and clothing, then they wrapped all of the items to donate.

The gifts will be given to the family before Christmas, so that all of the children will have a present under the tree.

Officials said these donations will make a huge impact on the children and the parents.

"The children will get an experience this Christmas that they've never had before probably," said Brandi Candido, Kids Oneida Adopt A Family chairperson.  "The parents are the ones that will be able to enjoy the holiday without the stress of having to try to provide for them because they had some barriers this Christmas to doing so for their families."

This is an annual program for Kids Oneida. The non for profit works with at risk children and their families by helping them overcome life's obstacles. The goal of the program is to keep families together.
