A lot of teens have a short attention span when it comes to working on long-term projects.

High schoolers from two local robotics teams don't have that problem, and now their hard work is paying off.

The students from JavaScouts and Geared Up have risen through the ranks of local competition to earn a spot in the international "First" championships in St. Louis.

The competition is next month and the students have completed fundraising to earn the money to register for their meets.

"I've always really enjoyed building and some of the other things associated with it," JavaScout member Liam Evans said. "Competition has always been something I've really enjoyed too."

"In robotics, there's not many women and there's not many women who work with technology," Geared Up member Alexandria Burger said. "I don't see any difference between me and any of the guys and I feel like it's a really cool opportunity."

Their enthusiasm shines a bright light on a community where recent disappointments with AMS and nanotechnology  have many wondering if science has a future in a small, upstate landscape.
