The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a wetlands permit for the Marcy Nanocenter site, which will enable the next phase of the Nano Utica initiative, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office announced Wednesday.

The approval will allow for construction of a wafer fabrication campus, which will create more jobs locally, Cuomo's office said.

"The approval of this permit is an important step forward to continue economic development plans, creating jobs in the Mohawk Valley and building on our $1.5 billion investment at Nano Utica,' Cuomo said. "This new hub will re-create in Utica the success we have seen in Albany, with international investors taking note of the innovation and development happening in Upstate New York."

The Marcy Nanocenter site is on the SUNYIT campus. Issuance of the permit is the culmination of nearly 10 months of work. The permit will focus on creating, protecting and restoring environmentally sensitive sites at Oriskany Flats Wildlife Management Area and stream enhancement projects associated with storm-damaged areas within the Mohawk River Watershed.
