WUTR: What’s in Store for 2016? 1/1/15 2015 certainly made for an interesting year and as we saw in Angie's review, that sets the groundwork for what could be an even more interesting twelve months ahead. It will start in the next few weeks with the word of life church beatings case, which brought national attention to our area. In two weeks, the eight people still facing charges related to the October murder of Lucas Leonard, are set to appear again in court. All have been offered plea deals by district attorney Scott McNamara, but there's no way to know who might take a deal or chose to roll the dice at trial.

Regionally, nothing is bigger than the promise of nano coming to the Mohawk Valley. Many people are ready to welcome back companies like General Electric and ams, the Austrian-based nanotech manufacturer who will soon be  tenants on the SUNY Poly campus. Their presence is expected to bring hundreds of high paying jobs back to the area.

Another development expected to be be fleshed out in the year ahead is a new regional hospital in Utica.

Governor cuomo has allocated funds for the project, which would combine the three current utica area hospitals into one new facility. But, officials with the Mohawk Valley Health Systems have indicated that the loss of state money through the mv500 plan may mean the development of a new hospital at the current St. Luke's campus in New Hartford.

And finally in 2016, we'll get a new congressional representative. Last month, Richard Hanna, Republican in the 22nd district of New York, said he would not seek re-election. The announcement creates an open seat in the house, which is a rarity in local politics. It also opens the region up to what could be a campaign free for all in the year ahead, with several candidates already announced, and many expected in the coming months. So those are just a few of the things we'll have our eyes on here at eyewitness news in the year ahead... and as the unexpected happens we'll of course bring that to you also.
