Accommodations are individualized adjustments designed to prevent discrimination within an environment. They provide students with disabilities the equitable opportunity to engage and participate in Poly learning and living environments. They are NOT to ensure success in a college program.
Accommodations can vary depending on an individual’s disability and the context in which they are needed. They can include but are not limited to:
- Physical accommodations: These might involve modifications to physical spaces, ergonomic or accessible furniture, accessible restrooms, and access to accessible parking spaces.
- Academic accommodations: Accommodations may involve providing alternate formats for textbooks or instructional materials (e.g., braille, audio), extended time on exams, or preferential seating.
- Communication or program accommodations: These accommodations help students with communication disabilities to effectively receive and convey information. This might involve Sign Language interpreters, captioning services, or written communication alternatives.
- Residential accommodations: Living and dining accommodations could include a single room, air conditioning, additional/separate refrigerator, etc.
- Temporary accommodations: If the impact of your condition is expected to last more than a week, it is likely we can support you with temporary accommodations. They may include boxed and delivered meals, note taking assistance, exam make ups, alternate format texts, or assistive technology loans. Please be aware that we cannot assist with personal care such as typing homework assignments, laundry, or transportation to off-campus medical appointments.
Accommodative Testing Services
Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides a space for testing accommodations to be fulfilled as part of a comprehensive approach to ensuring equal access to academic programs. Testing accommodations are designed to remove barriers while maintaining the essential requirements of each course. Testing staff prioritize academic integrity while providing a space that is an extension of the classroom experience.
Students can request testing accommodations by submitting the Request for Accommodations Form and following the steps to register with SAS. Students who are approved for testing accommodations through SAS must initiate the testing process at least three (3) school days in advance of each exam. Advance notice allows SAS to coordinate space, proctoring, and necessary technology in a manner that upholds the integrity of the testing environment while honoring the student's accommodations.
Students should consult with SAS as early as possible if any of the following apply:
- Their course includes pop quizzes
- They have back-to-back classes where extended time may interfere with attendance or participation
- They are enrolled in labs that require the use of specialized equipment
- Their testing needs fall outside SAS business hours (8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
- Their exam requires specific software (e.g., SolidWorks, MATLAB)
SAS will collaborate with students, instructors, and campus departments to provide reasonable testing solutions when standard procedures may not apply.
For complete information on expectations, scheduling procedures, and student responsibilities, please refer to our Accommodative Testing Policy in Policies and Procedures. Students are responsible for reading, understanding, and adhering to this policy, and are encouraged to contact SAS with any questions or concerns.
