Energy Storage Technology Capstone Training Program

Energy storage is an emerging group of technologies that is enabling the operation of electrical vehicles, energy production systems such as photovoltaics, wind, electrical vehicles, and mobile electronic devices. As New York’s clean energy economy is continuing to rapidly expand and drive job growth, there is a need for skilled workers with necessary technical training to be hired by energy storage and clean energy industry in the Capital Region and in New York State.

Program Dates:

Semester 1 - Sept to Dec. 2022:

(a) Classroom Presentations: 1 hour per week
(b) Laboratory Training: 1 or more hours per week

Semester 2 - Feb to May 2023:

(a) Laboratory Training: 1 or more hours per week
(b) Student poster presentations (May 2023)

Who should attend: College students who are interested in learning and be trained on battery fundamentals, electrical energy storage, and battery management systems to find related jobs or to advance within their current job. Students will be trained in a two semesters Capstone program offered in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters. The program is open to SUNY Poly and non-SUNY Poly students.

The program covers the fundamentals of energy storage technologies, giving you an understanding of battery cell manufacturing and teaching you the skills to manage storage units and innovate in this technology field. Faculty and industry experts will provide instruction through focused classroom training and hands-on laboratory experience at SUNY Poly's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) in Albany, NY. Students will gain exposure to the aspects of building a battery from start to finish and in conjunction with an energy projection system. Students will be able to engage in many different opportunities for experiential learning and internships in energy storage. Students will get college credits for each semester participating to the program.

Topics Included: Introduction to battery design, battery packaging and safety, battery electrochemistry, battery testing, grid storage technology, and assignment of a special innovative project.
