Open Classroom Initiative

The Open Classroom Initiative (OCI) is part of the development program for new and junior faculty at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. It aims to provide a supportive and collaborative environment for faculty as they develop their strategies for teaching excellence and student success in the classroom.

All new and junior faculty are strongly encouraged to participate and to include observation from participating in OCI as part of their teaching portfolio. Faculty are encouraged to visit/observe at least two classes, and observing courses outside the primary discipline is also recommended.

How to participate and expectations:

  • Please review the list of professors, all Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching recipients,  and their classes that are part of the OCI listed below.
  • Email the professor to arrange the visit to their class. Keep in mind that not every class period is good observation since there may be a test going on a specific date or other activities not suitable for observation.
    • For in-person classes: You are expected to arrive on time and ideally stay for the entire class period. If you are not staying the entire class time, make arrangements with the professor so that your departure is not disturbing.
    • For the asynchronous online classes: You will be granted week-long access to the class to observe the typical weekly activities as well as the structure of the asynchronous online class.
