SUNY Poly maintains Safety Data Sheets of Hazardous Chemicals used or stored on campus. The EHS Department also reviews proposed chemicals to ensure adequate storage, handling, usage, and waste determinations are made.

Purchasers are expected to submit the Chemical Request Form (Google form) which will include an upload of the SDS for the proposed chemical. The user(s) of the chemical should work with the PI/supervisor to complete the submission form so they are familiar with the safety considerations noted in the SDS.

The Chemical Request Form includes information that can be obtained from the SDS, and will be used to populate the online SDS library that will be maintained with the most current SDS should a new version be released.

When fully entered, all SDSs will all show up in the online JJKeller Safety Management Suite—Safety Data Sheet Center.

  1. Click on the link to the online JJKeller Safety Management Suite—Safety Data Sheet Center.
  2. Type the name of the product in the Product Name column. Chemicals are listed alphabetically, though the search tool can be adjusted to meet the user’s needs. (At this time, all chemicals are listed as SUNY Polytechnic Institute Campus. No further locational designations are noted.)

The Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 1910.1200 requires chemical manufacturers and importers to evaluate the hazards of the chemicals they produce or import. Using that information, they must then prepare more detailed technical bulletins called Safety Data Sheets, or SDSs.

Each department head or designee is responsible for maintaining a manufacturer-specific SDS for each hazardous or toxic substance used or stored in their work area (s), and for ensuring that they are readily accessible during each work shift to employees when they are in their work area(s).

In lieu of maintaining hard copies of SDSs, electronic versions will be available through the online JJKeller Safety Management Suite—Safety Data Sheet Center, SUNY Poly’s Chemical Inventory and Safety Data Sheet service provider.

Please note, this online Center for SDS records may ONLY be used as the “sole”. SDS resource if ALL employees with the potential for chemical exposure in any given area have full access (i.e., computer access, a general understanding of how to navigate the system, etc.) to the service; otherwise, hard copies must be made readily available as well – preferably in or near the area of use.

Each department head or designee is expected to provide the EHS Office a copy of the SDS of chemicals proposed for purchase or ones that have been received when they arrive. This can be done via the Chemical Request Form (Google form). Check the online Safety Data Sheet Center to verify if the chemical SDS has already been submitted.
