How to Apply

Getting Started 

  1. Review the programs offered through the SUNY Consortium 

    1. Over 1000 programs to choose from 

    2. Different lengths of study abroad programs 

      1. 2-3 weeks 

      2. Semester 

      3. Full academic year 

      4. Summer/Winter term  

  2. Determine your eligibility 

    1. Must be in good academic standing  

      1. GPA of 2.75 or higher is recommended.  

      2. Some programs may have specific GPA requirements. 

  3. Meet with the SUNY Poly Financial Aid Office to discuss financial requirements for your Study Abroad experience. 

  4. Meet with your SUNY Poly academic advisor to discuss your course selection abroad and ensure that your intended coursework will apply to your SUNY Poly program of study. 

    1. The Study Abroad Office cannot advise on academic course selection, and only your academic advisor/department can assist you with this. 

    2. It is important to discuss your intended course selection to ensure that you are going to enroll in courses that will still be counted toward your graduation requirement. 

  5. Contact the Study Abroad Office to learn more about study abroad options and requirements. 


 

Ready to Apply? 

After selecting the program(s) you are interested in:  

  1. Submit the program application(s) to the host SUNY school 

    1. Instructions for the application process will be outlined by the host SUNY school 

    2. You may apply to multiple programs, if you are uncertain which you would like to pursue 

      1. You will need to be mindful of deadlines provided by the host SUNY school to ensure you select your final program by the required deadline 

  2. Submit the SUNY Poly Petition to Study Abroad 

    1. This petition will officially notify multiple SUNY Poly offices of your plan to study abroad and will allow you to finalize your study abroad experience. 

      1. You will need to indicate your final Study Abroad program selection, as well as your intended courses in this program 

      2. The Registrar’s Office will register you in “Study Abroad” credit during the term you will be away from SUNY Poly. 

      3. The Bursar’s Office will generate a tuition bill for you based on your Study Abroad enrollment. 


 

Final Steps 

The Study Abroad Office at your host SUNY university will guide you through the process before you leave for your study abroad experience. This includes: 

  • Assisting you with housing abroad options 

  • Passport/visa applications, as necessary 

  • Travel planning guidance 

  • Other pre departure preparations
